Cross bracing is used to keep buildings stable when the wind blows and during seismic events, such as an earthquake. It also limits the building's lateral movement, reducing the likelihood of damage to the structure's components and cladding.
It is a usual application when constructing earthquake-safe buildings. Cross bracing can be applied to any rectangular frame structure, such as chairs and bookshelves. Its rigidity for two-dimensional grid structures can be analyzed mathematically as an instance of the grid bracing problem.

Similar to cross bracing, this uses diagonal supports between rectangular sections of the structural frame. However, instead of using two supports per section forming an X, single diagonal bracing does exactly what its name suggests and only uses one.
