Galvanized pipes are pipes made of iron or steel that have been dipped in a protective zinc coating to prevent corrosion and rust. Zinc corrodes more readily than iron, and the zinc serves as a "sacrificial" coating.
They have a high level of abrasion resistance and can withstand harsh weather conditions such as wind and rain. They are easy to handle during transportation and application and can be implemented in structures easily. They are resistant to corrosion and road salts. They do not need additional coats of paint.
The most commonly referenced ASTM standard for galvanized pipes is ASTM A53. This standard covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipes in nominal sizes ranging from 1/8 to 26 inches.
You can use a magnet to determine if you have galvanized pipes, because it will stick. A magnet will not stick to copper or lead. Copper pipe: where you scratched will be a shiny orange color, like a new penny. Lead pipe: where you scratched will be a shiny silver color and will be easy to scratch.
